EVENT D2 - So Anyway, Here's Wonderwall (All Day Event)

Post by GM Nicha » Mon Dec 19, 2022 6:14 pm

So anyway, here’s Wonderwall

While the crackling blue energy of the shield overhead has kept the Concord Dawn and Kandra’s Run safe from bombardment, it will be hardly sufficient to repel a Mandalorian ground assault. Recognising the risk General Novar has asked Captain Borintus to coordinate the construction of defenses around the length of the town and wreck. Borintus knows that you don’t have the time for real fortifications, but something is better than nothing.

This All Day Event is open to all PCs, each PC who participates must roll for both steps.

Advantage and Disadvantage are turned into boost and setback for that character’s next roll at a rate of 2 to 1. Despair removes one build point from the PC’s total earned build points (to a minimum of 0) Triumph adds a build point.

For this event PCs will generate build points they can then spend towards various defenses to protect the encampment. Players are encouraged to coordinate spending towards the following possible defenses:

10 points - A basic prefab wall that will keep out most beasts and require attackers to bypass or destroy it. (Only one wall may be selected)

20 points - A heavily reinforced prefab wall with inbuilt firing positions that will keep out all beasts and make bypass or destruction difficult. (Only one wall may be selected)

10 points - A comms array from a shattered troop transport. If properly calibrated it will be able to provide the encampment with warning of any impending attack.

5 points - Two rows of shock wire rolled around the perimeter which will dramatically slow any foot assault (but which will not slow vehicles)

5 points - Vehicle traps from the 640th Colony Garrison supply. These large caltrop shaped constructions prevent the passage of most vehicles and generate a significant electromagnetic field that disrupts unshielded speeder technology. They will not slow a conventional foot assault though.

15 points - Basic turrets salvaged from the wreck of the Concord Dawn. Slow firing but powerful, they will struggle to hit fast firing targets but will deter anything of a reasonable size and slow speed.

20 points - Refit point defense turrets salvaged from the wreck of the Concord Dawn. Fast firing and accurate, but with a limited firing arc these turrets can abley defend the encampment from aerial assault.

Step 1 - It’s all going to Plan

Before any real work can be done land needs to be cleared and plans drawn up. Ciph has grudgingly, at Mayor Evevos’ urging, made some of his industrial equipment available while those of a more academic bent have been invited to assist the Captain’s planning efforts.

PCs can opt to use the industrial equipment (a mix of logging exo-skeletons, land rollers and one very battered drone digger) to prepare the land. This is a piloting (planetary) check at average with one setback from unfamiliarity with the equipment ◆◆■. Alternatively, PCs can make a Knowledge (Warfare) check at average to assist Captain Borintus in planning the defenses ◆◆.
Success on the roll and every two further successes adds one build point.

Step 2 - The Hard Work

Now that preparations are finished it's time to actually erect the defenses. Borintus mucks in with the troops, leading by example. It’s hard work in the freezing cold as a strong wind starts to gust, but that’s all the more reason to warm up with a little hard yakka.

PCs can choose to setup defenses manually, digging holes, putting up walls and so on. This is an average athletics check with one difficulty upgrade from the freezing winds which might cause accidents . Less physically inclined heroes might be able to put their knowledge of traps and the wild to use in tweaking the defenses. This is an average survival check with one difficulty upgrade from the freezing winds which might cause accidents . Success on the roll and every two further successes adds one build point.
Co-GMAEDT Timezone • We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

Zephrin was on hand to help with the defenses. He had a fair grasp of tactics so he was able to help with planning. Then it was over to good old elbow grease.

Once again the Force came to his aid. Seeing a Jedi get stuck in with a shovel inspired the others to get moving too! Hopefully they could make the whole area troublesome for any invading Mandalorians...

(OOC: I'm assuming we can put our points together and then decide what defences are being chosen)

Basic fortifications were something that Fec had a little experience building. Of course, that was nothing like what they were doing now. Still every little bit of knowledge helped, right?

The work went well enough, though it was more than a bit exhausting in the cold. He would certainly need a cup or two of Caf after this to make it through the rest of the day.

"Yeah, I have a Class-2 rating, I'm sure I can operate one of these easily," she said with a bit of dismissive overconfidence, which seemed to be a rather infamous Corellian trait. Admittedly, she always did want to find an excuse to get into one of these exo-skeletons to make herself bigger and stronger than she was. Her overconfidence seemed to pay off as she could do some heavy lifting with ease, pushing off rocks and ripping out stumps.

However, when it came to the actual work of what they needed to do, she made a mess of the building materials that were bound to incite some migraine to a few engineers on site. She huffed as she defended her handiwork. "Look, at least nobody got hurt, okay?"

Tomin was quite enthusiastic about the chance to operate some construction equipment. Sure, there were some skeptical glances at the apparently blind lady climbing onto the machinery. But she had no trouble climbing or finding the controls, did not run anyone over or plow into any buildings, so...that was probably ok?

The other things she didn't do were throw up any useful barricades or structures. Instead, there are a series of middling-large holes scooped out across the most obvious approach. "Just wait...this is gonna be great!"

She hardly notices the cold as she scurries from hole to hole, covering them with rather obvious lattices of branches. In hindsight, there were probably some engineering and cognitive differences that needed to be considered when scaling up animal traps for armored Mandalorians. She'd expertly covered her scent around the traps, but they were rather comically visible.

Menial labour?!?!?

This was the absolute worst, and it was a hungover and unhappy Zeltron that had been dragged along to help out. His experience with flying a ship did seem to come in handy with operating the unfamiliar equipment, and luckily no one got injured.

Rather than doing any more heavy lifting though, he opted to "help" with setting out traps. Which he got thoroughly bored of at some point and left the work half-finished.

Ciph would probably remember the gigantic furball who had helped him haul logs and other heavy stuff from one side to the other. He would most likely know Snowflake was no stranger to hard work.

And he would probably be rather wary of letting the Gigoran handle most any kind of industrial equipment without very specific instructions and some training.

But there was no time to be careful this time around, so off the white mountain went, unfortably trying to fit into an exo-skeleton, giving up after some time since it seemed to hold him back more than help him, but then finally - and to the surprise of many onlookers - finding his way around the battered drone digger. Didn't mean his performance was fantastic, of course, and some blunders here and there did lead to others having to stop their work, either to give him pointers or just to get out of the way. But it did get some work done!

When the time came for the actual hard work of moving things to their proper places, Ciph was probably relieved - that he knew Snowflake could do, based on his previous experience.

But for some reason, moving things around and having a purpose when doing it were very different things, and Snowie seemed to have lost track of the latter since their crash. Once again, he did a lot of heavy lifting, but at most that would help others who knew what they were going for, as he himself wasn't very sure where each thing should go...

At the start, there seemed to be some translation error between the disparate groups. Zeline's primal desire to secure the perimeter led to her figuring out what one group meant. Apparently, this thing called a "keikaku" meant plan. Once she was able to properly convey that, the aliens in question were quite pleased by the proceedings.

Somehow more impressive was her knowledge of digging holes. Such had been her lot in life for many years. Certainly that resonated with her more than reading another magazine about traps.

Sirina seems to have a knack for the digger drone, despite lacking familiarity. By the time she's done helping prepare the land for the settlement's defenses, she has it practically drifting to and fro-- going for style as much as substance.

That done, she sets her huntress's mind to work preparing traps and other tricks. So inspired are her devious plans, however, that a particularly nasty pitfall catches several other workers off-guard, sending them tumbling into an abyss of icy water that, fortunately, they can be recovered from even if it sets progress back a ways while they warm back up inside.
