D7 - Ring It Up

Post by GM Nicha » Wed Jan 11, 2023 12:18 am

Ring it Up

An unusual message has arrived at Mandalorian HQ from a Neo-Crusader warrior who claims to have captured a patrol of Hopers. He’s offering a chance to ‘win them back’ if we have anyone willing to face him in a traditional Mandalorian battle circle. Normally we’d decline, but one of those prisoners is a sergeant with some sensitive security knowledge and we can’t give the Crusaders the opportunity to interrogate him. You need to defeat this Mandalorian at his own game.

Open to: 4 players

In this event 4 players will compete against the Mandalorian champion to try and win the release of captured Republic prisoners.

Your shuttle brings you into a small valley sheltered from the howling winds. Even through the falling snow you can see a rough circle sprayed in red point on the centre of the small frozen river that runs down this gully. A helmetless Mandalorian stands in its center, watching impassively as you arrive while a score of his fellows guard a shivering patrol of Republic soldiers.

He waits until you approach before addressing you all with a look of contempt. “It’s said that the Republic used to be guarded by great warriors, Jedi heroes whose skill in battle enabled them to defeat whole armies. How great were those Knights of the Old Republic.” He spits onto the ice. “And now it has you.”

He gestures down at the ring. “This is a Mandalorian battle circle. If you can defeat me be the rules of our challenge then the prisoners go free. If not, you must each answer me one question honestly.” He grins. “I look forward to hearing what you have to say.”

Each participating player must roll 3 times representing 3 rounds against Canderous. They can roll a mixture of melee or brawl any number of times (representing attacks and physical struggle) or skullduggery once per character with the difficulty reduced one step once (representing a feint, but it only works once!).
Force powers of any kind are not permitted.
The first two rolls are against hard difficulty with one upgrade and one setback dice ■. The final roll is against daunting with two upgrades and a setback. ■ . All of these rolls count as attacks for the purposes of talents and equipment.

Your goal is to score 10 or more battle points.

Every successful roll generates one battle point and every two additional successes on that roll generates a further battle point. Advantage and Disadvantage are turned into boost and setback for that character’s next roll at a rate of 2 to 1. A triumph adds a battle point to the overall tally while a despair subtracts a battle point from the overall tally.

If the group manages 10 or more battle points they are victorious. The patrol is rescued and you return home heroes. If you managed 9 or fewer points you must each answer Canderous once honestly, the patrol is still released but you’ll have to hope those answers don’t cost you…

When the message came that someone was challenging the hopers to a traditional Mando battle circle, Snowflake was quick to mention he'd been in one before. Some were probably suspicious the Gigoran might have been just confused, as usual. But sending a giant Gigoran to take part in something like that was not a hard decision to make.

The first round began, and it didn't take long for the Gigoran to find a good opening and throw a fierce uppercut straight to the Mandalorian's jaw.

As soon as the man stepped back from the hit, Snowie did what he knew was the custom and started reciting, his voice booming

"Cankerous spits, he speaks so loud
But when it goes from word to punch?
You hold your head all up and proud -
Makes it that much easier to crunch!"

For some reason, Cankerous didn't seem to agree much with that. Maybe the words really got to him, maybe he was frustrated that a non-mandalorian would know their customs so well. But the man came to the second round guided by fury. Snowie took some nasty hits that would definitely make his life harder in the third round, but in the end he managed to find another opening, this time raising his heavy foot-paw to Cankerous' chest.

"No more words you got to boast?
One more roast and you are toast!

If the first verse spurred Cankerous, this made him positively furious. Snowie tried to hold back his barrage of hits, but this time the Mandalorian's fists reached him before he could get a good hit in.

"Ha! Not as fun as Krannor, but you're not all bad!", he said at the end as he stepped back to let the others take their turns. "2 x 1 against Snowflake, though!"

Then, turning to the others "Let's go, team!"

Melee was far from Terreck's Specialty, he was capable of using a knife or other weapon when things came down to it though. So, when he stepped into the ring, he knew he would at least face some success, but he was uncertain how much.

He was a hard battle, the Mandolorian was well skilled, but what Terreck lacked in strength he made up for in determination, and tenaciousness. Traits that eventually lead him to victory, though he was certainly winded by the end of the ordeal.

Before any good fight, the best choice was to dose up on some performance enhancers. Zeline stuck the needle into her arm and sighed. "This is the best in years. YEARS."

Overconfidence was a slow and insidious killer. At least she wasn't in an actual battlefield. Wrestling livestock had helped somewhat... but really, she lacked in technique. And reach. And flexibility.

An unlikley opponent steps into the ring.

"Oh look, at the big bad boy in metal armor flexing his muscles. Pft...I eat boys like for breakfast." She smirked, and stretched, ready for a fight.

"Are you ready? SAND THROW!" She throw some dirt (not sand) into his visor, and then ran legfirst into....his metal balls.

"Take THAT!"

They exchanged blows....well, Flora was running away mostly, until she managed to suddenly turn around and sweep his legs from under him, leading to a large ooomph.

Immediatly she jumped up and did an elbow drop!

Canderous staggers back, beaten and bloodied...but with a grin.

"Ha! That wasn't a half bad fight. Didn't think you had it in you."
With a motion he gestures to the other Mandalorians who released the captured Hopers.

"As promised, the prisoners may go with you. Win or lose, as long as the fight is worthy, then honor is gained. If there's nothing at stake – your possessions, your life, your world, your secrets – then the battle's meaningless."

He gives you all a nod of respect.

"Until we meet on the field of battle. Do not cease your training, for I shall want you at your best."

-------------

Years later Canderous would regale companions with his stories of the Mandalorian wars. Of plummeting through the atmosphere astride a basilisk, of worlds burning and enemies slaughtered. And that one time on some snowy world nobody had ever heard of, a rap battling Gigorian, the hardest Republic veteran he'd ever seen, a medic high as a kite and, he shits you not, a jedi healer who kicked him in the balls were his match.

He only tells that story when he's very drunk though.

Hoper Victory!
