D5 - Crime and Punishment (All Day Event)

Crime and Punishment

Every planet has a shady side, even Obroa-Skai. The Alpine Clan has run organised crime here for over a hundred years. They specialise in smuggling, the creation and distribution of narcotics and, it’s whispered they control many of the planet’s luxurious hunting lodges. The Clan is a loose collection of locals deeply familiar with the planet’s terrain who felt they were being left out of decision making and funding by the big cities. There are few who know the planet better, but also few more dangerous.

So they sound like the perfect folks to try and recruit for the war effort! Nimi Roth has organised a sitdown at the Most Dangerous Game hunting lodge. Now all you have to do is convince the crime syndicate that working against the Mandos is good for business.

In this All Day Event PCs will try to convince the Clan’s lieutenants and its feared boss without winding up feeding the ice fishes.

This All Day Event is open to all PCs.

Advantage and Disadvantage are turned into boost and setback for that character’s next roll at a rate of 2 to 1. Triumphs upgrade the ability of the next check targeting that lieutenant or boss, despair’s upgrade the difficulty of the next roll targeting that lieutenant or boss.

To succeed the players need to either convince 3 lieutenants or 2 lieutenants and the boss. Convincing all the lieutenants and the boss will be considered a critical success

Every player character has 3 attempts to convince a member of the Clan. These can be done in any order. However, as the difficulty increases for each lieutenant after each attempt it is recommended players coordinate beforehand.

Lieutenant Trem ‘Hairs’ Fakale (Bothan, male)
The Clan’s go to for all smuggling and their point man for handling off world contacts, Trem is the son of immigrants, something the Clan loves to rib him about. A quiet, professional man whose nickname comes from his near prenatural instincts (causing his hair to stand up) he finds the entire premise of the Smiling Bothan distasteful but is not prepared to discuss the irony of his own involvement in organized crime.

PCs can approach Trem with either negotiation, skulduggery or astrogation (representing striking a good deal, offering interesting underworld info or providing star charts respectively.) His starting difficulty is average with one setback ■, and the difficulty of the check upgrades by one after every PC attempt. After 3 successful attempts he will be convinced.

Lieutenant Stromvel ‘Stone Fist’ Wudark (Dowutin, male)
Stromvel is the muscle, which at 7’4” and 350 pounds is pretty easy. Many Dowutin moved to Obro-Skai 80 years ago to work the mines, but mining never came naturally to Stromvel who much preferred cracking heads. After getting into a fight with (and hospitalizing) the Clan’s last enforcer they offered him a job with pay, respect and all the fights he could ever want. Quick to laugh and quick to anger he’s been a central member of the Clan ever since. After 3 successful attempts he will be convinced.

PCs can approach Trem with either Athletics, Brawl or Coordination (representing physical feats that he respects). His starting difficulty is easy with one setback ■ , and each attempt upgrades the difficulty of the next attempt twice (he gets bored easily).

Lieutenant Brigid ‘Frigid’ Van Carrnum (Human, female)
Brigid thinks most of the clan are idiots, she is usually right. As Boss Glacier’s niece she was encouraged to attend a fancy city school and pursue her passion as a chemist. A passion she now uses to ensure that the Clan’s drug supplies are both high quality and mass-producible. A smart and educated young woman she finds the Clan’s rustic ways a little passé, but still retains a fierce loyalty to the family. Her nickname comes unsurprisingly from her personality. After 3 successful attempts she will be convinced.

PCs can approach Brigid with Medicine, Education or Deception (Representing either what she is genuinely interested in or the ability to fake it). Her starting difficulty is hard with one setback ■, but her difficulty does not upgrade after attempts.

Lieutenant Markus ‘Smiler’ Greatscholar (Human male)
The Clan’s charming trigger man, Markus comes from an old Obroa-Skai family that fell apart in his early teens. The young man fell into a life of crime which he found he quite enjoyed, particularly after he learnt empathy was optional. Most of the Clan is quietly terrified of Smiler since his friendly and open expression disguises a hardened killer. After 3 successful attempts he will be convinced.

PCs can approach Markus with Ranged -Light, Ranged-Heavy or Coercion (his passions in life). His starting difficulty is average with two difficulty upgrades , and he adds a setback dice after every attempt to sway him.

Boss Pieter ‘Glacier’ Van Carrnum (Human male, old)
The undisputed head of the Clan is Boss Glacier, a wiry old man with bright eyes set deep in his skull. The Van Carnnums were one of the Clan’s founding families due their their encyclopedic knowledge of the planet’s best smuggling routes, a tradition Piete has maintained. The Boss likes letting everyone speak first before offering his own opinion. While ruthless, he does consider what is best for the Clan first. After 3 successful attempts he will be convinced.

PCs can approach Pieter with Survival, Discipline or Resilience (representing the skills the Clan is built on). His starting difficulty is hard with one difficulty upgrade and a setback dice ■, and his difficulty upgrades by one after every attempt.

Unfortunately being around all of this darkness and violence left a rather murky stain on the Force. The need of the mission to persuade the bosses outweighed Zephrin's personal discomfort, so for once he allowed the darkness to aid him.

Stone Fist was suitably impressed by the Jedi's athletic abilities, but Zeph was going to need a long time in the Meditation room to feel good about it...

Sadly the large man was less then impressed with Fec's attempts at athletics. But luckily it was perhaps just enough to give him an edge in any further attempts. Whatever those might be.

Still feeling unhappy with the previous attempt Zephrin switched tactics and went to talk with Brigid, the gang's chemist. His early attempts were rebuffed but he persevered and eventually brought her around.

Brigid was particularly interested in how a Miralukan perceived the various compounds and concoctions she liked to produce. He did his best to explain that it was hard without a unified frame of reference, but his force sight intrigued her. Eventually she seemed to be satisfied but obviously wanted to know more.

"Hey handsome," Apollo practically slid over to the Bothan lieutenant, offering his flask of whiskey to him. "Wanna know how the man in the moon cuts his hair?" the Zeltron smirked before delivering the punchline. "'eclipse it."

The joke got a groan and a laugh from Hairs, who took a sip from the flask. "Good stuff, right? Real Corellian whiskey," Apollo pointed out. "I might know how to get you a couple of flasks, you know. Makes for a great hair of the dog, if you know what I mean. Especially after a night of howling at the moon."

The Zeltron captain almost had the Bothan fully hooked. Almost. He just needed one more push from someone else, and not someone who was looking to get him drunk and leashed.

The Alpine clan holds a lot of power on Obroa-skai, and has networks up the wazoo*, so of course they need to be on board if resistance is going to be effective. If they side with the Mandalorians? The cities will have to stand on their own.

So, despite some protestations that she's really not well-suited to convincing anyone, she finds herself out at the Hunting Lodge hoping to bag some support for the resistance.

Chatting with the casually murderous trigger man was a punishing experience for the force-sensitive Miralukan, but steering conversation toward hunting rifles best suited for Obroa-skai's climate and terrain was a reasonable ice-breaker. Just...really, the Mandalorians were known for not being nearly as comfortable with anyone else doing crimes in their area, and that'd be bad for business.

And as much as she wanted to note that massacring all your neighbors was horrible and needed to be stopped, she took a deep breath and noted that it was probably pretty bad for business instead...right? The gritted teeth probably looked like a smile as they shook on their understanding of how to use hunting sights to find the gaps in Mandalorian armor.

Luckily Perhaps for Fec he was a bit tougher than he looked, so when it came to trying to survive the bosses test it went well. Though his efforts did leave him a bit winded. Maybe it was time to head home.

Crime and Punishment: Targeting the Boss. Resilience at hard with an upgrade and a setback. 2 boosts from physical training, 1 boost from. physical training. Might as well not roll them as the will be blank 60% of the time.

Snowie was happy to see the hopers trying so hard to get along with family! So happy, in fact, that he went straight to talk to Boss Pieter.

The Gigoran was known to the old man, of course. Familiarity was generally a good thing, but also meant he knew most about the snowman's story than most, so it wasn't that easy for Snowie to impress him. Even when he put on a very, very good show of being tough and disciplined.

The old man was proud of having someone like that on his side, of course. But something Snowie said also seemed to rub the old mant he wrong way...

With a little introduction from Apollo to smooth things over, Hairs finds that Rece makes some compelling arguments about how being an active warzone is bad for profits.

The stimulating intellectual conversation with Frigid goes downhill when she realizes Rece doesn't actually know much about drugs.

For Zeline's part, she manufactured exactly what the so-called Frigid woman wanted: drugs. And boy did she like to make drugs. Mass producible, well, that was something harder to come by.

That was, until she found out that the lodge had a constant supply of, well, a chemical found exactly in an animal that they'd killed so, so, so often. A little tweak led to MANY DRUGS. "There," Zeline said, sniffing harshly afterward. "It's good stuff."

Sirina eventually shows to try and win sway with her bosses. Starting off with "Frigid", Sirina is on the receiving end of a cool reception. She then doggedly pursues convincing "Stonefist", who she at first seems to gain some ground with but can't seal the deal.

Truly hard to impress.

And, as Snowflake more or less remembered, even more so after a while - the man's patience was as well-known as the Gigoran's technological skills.

Which is to say both were basically non-existant, of course.

Snowie still tried. Maybe the angry man would still have some fun at reminiscing about a good fist fight from a few years back?

As our fluffy friend would find out, that was not the case - the Stone Fist that hit his face in that last attempt at a fun match was particularly heavy!

"Look, you've already met all of the best, so I suppose it's time that you spoke to the rest," Vala would say as she strolled up casually to the highly intimidating leader of the Alpine Clan. Size wasn't everything in this galaxy and a lesson that often plays itself out is that a pin can always pop the most inflated ball. As for balls, she just happen to have brought her own in this case.

"How about we do something fun, then? Murderball is a pretty fun game back in the day. If I can beat you once, maybe we can have a real talk?" She offered it as a game. Internally, she smirked, considering being smaller might give her the better advantage here.

Okay, duck, dodge and...OOFFF!

If the game was Murder Ball, this was a massacre. Vala found herself completely outclassed by Stone Fist's physical prowess. At one point, she was struck so hard that the ball rebounded for him to grab and strike her away. That was an impressive feat to witness, albeit painful in experience, she had to admit.
