D4ME - Songs of Victory (fluff event)

Post by GM Nicha » Wed Feb 22, 2023 2:42 pm

Someone seems to have rigged up a semi-functional karaoke machine from a hodgepodge of tactical displays, a battered civilian comms unit and a collection of tracks donated from Kandra's Run or worse, salvaged from Republic stores.

The screens are glitchy, sometimes the song plays far too fast and everybody in the camp has already heard 'Mr Starside' 200 times. But still, the karaoke has proved immensely popular, particularly after the troops have had a bit of a drink.

Tonight the battle for karaoke champion begins!
Karaoke Champion.jpg
This fluff scene is open to all players as you compete for the most important strategic objective yet, bragging rights!

Every character will be allowed to make up to two song rolls, and may also bolster these with liquid courage rolls if they so desire.

Before either of their song rolls a character may elect to take a drink of the strong stuff with a liquid courage roll. Make an average resilience check with one setback ■. Success will allow you to upgrade your subsequent song roll twice! Failure will add two setback dice to your song roll. Advantage, disadvantage, triumph and despair will not be tracked from this as command doesn't wish to encourage drinking.

For your song rolls please roll your choice of charm or leadership at average difficulty with one setback. ■. Success and every two subsequent successes will grant a song point. Advantage and disadvantage will contribute boost/setback dice to your next song roll. A triumph adds a song point, a despair removes one.

The winner of the bragging rights is the character with the most song points! In the result of a tie the tied players can roll one more liquid courage/song roll in a final sing off.

"Ladies and Gentlmen, No Evil is here to break the ice for yah! Let's get this party started!"
The Ortolans break into latest song.

Verse 1:
Yo, let me tell you 'bout a battle on Obroa-Skai,
Where the Hopers fought Haneul, a fallen Jedi,
She joined the Mandalorians, thought she had it made,
But when the squad arrived, she was in for a raid.

Chorus:
We're the Hopers, fighting for the Republic,
Against any enemy, we won't quit,
Zephrin, Tomin, Sirina, Terreck,
Together we'll win, we'll never lose respect.

Verse 2:
Zephrin, a Miralukan, strong and true,
He protected his allies, knew what to do,
Tomin, a Miralukan too, but with a rifle,
She saw through the force, his aim was vital.

Sirina, a sassy Pantoran, fought with her gun,
She hit her targets, had some fun,
Terreck, a cynical soldier, fought up close,
His rifle a deadly tool, he never froze.

Chorus:
We're the Hopers, fighting for the Republic,
Against any enemy, we won't quit,
Zephrin, Tomin, Sirina, Terreck,
Together we'll win, we'll never lose respect.

Verse 3:
Haneul fought hard, but the squad was too much,
They fought in an old temple, a Jedi's touch,
The temple collapsed, Haneul was defeated,
The Hopers won, their mission completed.

Now they move on, to fight another day,
Their victory celebrated, in their own way,
The Republic stands strong, thanks to their fight,
The Hopers always ready, to do what's right.

Chorus:
We're the Hopers, fighting for the Republic,
Against any enemy, we won't quit,
Zephrin, Tomin, Sirina, Terreck,
Together we'll win, we'll never lose respect.

Outro:
Yeah, that's how it went down on Obroa-Skai,
The Hopers won, their victory never to die,
In a galaxy of conflict, they stand tall,
The Hopers, fighting for one and all.

Tomin'd showed up to support the local band, generally hear what folks were singing, and-frankly-let off some steam with everyone else.

She hadn't expected a song about their fight, and did her best to just act casual with her 'bantha milk' (alcoholic, blue, not actually any kind of milk). Definitely not going up next though! She'll nurse her drink through a few more songs first.

Eventually she punches up one of the fight songs she grew up hearing at the annual herders vs. loggers skaiball game at the harvest fair, with an awkward attempt at rewording to fit some of the recent conflicts. It worked ok, but definitely gained a lot from the atmosphere.

Ever since returning from the fight with Hanuel in the arms of Fec and Tomin, Sirina had been obliged to spend much of her time being tended to in the newly restored medbay. Surely this was karmic balance for her swooping in at the last moment to see to it that the work there finally got finished.

In an egregious and inadvisable show of disregard for doctor's orders, Sirina nevertheless can be found fashionably late to make merry (see: drink) and sing songs with the other Hopers.

Her recent liquid diet proves unhelpful for her constitution as she immediately sets into the hardest of liquor available at the shindig and is half-past wasted half-past her first hour in attendance. A veritable menace from that moment on, she haunts her various childhood friends and current companions until an opportunity to sing presents itself.

The moment it takes a beat or two to find the next singer, Sirina storms the stage and attempts a punk-rock rendition of an overly earnest logging town serenade. It goes... better than expected. It helps that to pull that off takes more guts than skill. Once the song is finished, it takes some convincing to get Sirina to yield the spotlight and center of attention, and once she's been coerced offstage she does so with a chorus of curses and a few uncouth gestures, then immediately gets back to drinking while threatening to go another round.

Traditional Gigoran songs were infamous for being sung in their language - itself known for sounding more like growls, squeals and shrieks than words. So when Snowflake showed up for the karaoke party, quite a few faces probably winced in advance expecting what was to come.

The excitement from the opening song by No Evil was enough to raise up emotions in the fluffy tower, and before he even noticed he had a healthy dose of what he thought was Marbleberry juice in his hands.

It wasn't juice. It wasn't marbleberry. And Snowie drank it far too fast.

The Gigoran would normally be somewhat hesitant about stepping into the spotlight. But the not-marbleberry not-juice made quick work of that, and seeing Sirina, who he had known since he first came to Kandra's Run some time ago, on stage was enough encouragement that Snowie eventually made his way into the stage for a song of his own.

From the time he chose the song, the audience braced. Why would that thing have a Gigoran cooking song in memory??

Most of the audience probably thought the singing went as well as expected. Snowie knew better, however - he barely remembered the words in the language, he felt the wailing come out all wrong. He knew it would be hard as he hardly ever spoke or Gigoran, but it still hit him, and he came back to sit down with a heavy heart. He knew that was far in the past, and he had a family here. But somehow, it still hurt...

Maybe he could try again later to practice more?

Drinking!
Singing!
Drinking more!

Best. Time. Ever!

Finally these Republic folks were showing that they knew how to party. And Apollo was drinking as much as he could of the free booze. It wasn't amazing booze, but it was free booze.

"My fluffy friend," he snuggled Snowflake as if he was a giant stuffed animal, after his turn to sing was over, "I WILL SING FOR YOU!"

The song came on, and it was one of those sappy love songs. Not that it stopped Apollo from giving it his all, but it was not at all a song in his register, or talent to sing. There may or may not have been some booing.

"Ah, no no no... this won't do," Apollo declared about halfway through the song and stopped singing as he got busy with perusing the songs available. And drinking more of course. While the captain couldn't hold his alcohol that well it didn't mean he wasn't going to get absolutely wasted.

"OH! OH YES! This song I know! This is great!" He suddenly declared as he found a new song, and then fired up the new song. The more slow beat also fit Apollo perfectly to add in some (drunk) striptease throughout the song. It wasn't the evening's best singing-performance, but it was for sure the evening's most memorable performance.

"I'm too sexy for my love
Too sexy for my love
Love's going to leave me

I'm too sexy for my shirt
Too sexy for my shirt
So sexy it hurts
And I'm too sexy for Manaan
Too sexy for Manaan
Nar Shaddaa, and Taanab
And I'm too sexy for your party
Too sexy for your party
No way I'm disco dancing

I'm a model, you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah, on the catwalk, on the catwalk, yeah
I do my little turn on the catwalk

I'm too sexy for my car
Too sexy for my car
Too sexy by far
And I'm too sexy for my hat
Too sexy for my hat
What ya think about that?

I'm a model, you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah, on the catwalk, on the catwalk, yeah
I shake my little tush on the catwalk

Too sexy for my
Too sexy for my
Too sexy for my
Cut!

I'm a model, you know what I mean
And I do my little turn on the catwalk
Yeah, on the catwalk, yeah, on the catwalk, yeah
I shake my little tush on the catwalk

I'm too sexy for my cat
Too sexy for my cat
Poor pussy, poor pussy cat
I'm too sexy for my love
Too sexy for my love
Love's going to leave me

And I'm too sexy for this song"

With a smirk Fec slammed back his drink. Was it water? It had to be water if one considered the speed he chugged and how it didn't seem to affect him. Rising to his feet he took another glass from the bar and downed it as well on his way to stage. He wasn't a good singer at the best of times, but sometimes you had to give it your best.

Unfortunately for the crowd, his best was far from good enough though. The Sergeant sang off key at the best of times and this was no exception apparently. He did make up for it a bit though? Breaking into dance part way through the song. Which was a much better display of his skills. Still, it was likely a relief to most when he offered the crowd a bow and hoped off the stage.

Rece isn't much of a drinker, but he knows how to pace himself to keep up with the lightning-fast chadra-fan metabolism. Just the right amount of booze, and the knowledge that at least he's not the one who has to follow Apollo, finally gets him on stage.

He chooses an old folk classic he knows by heart. Then he realizes it's the Johnny Credit version which is not in his range at all. Also, it might be about death? He always found it soothing, but the crowd seems to find it a little grim under the circumstances.

Next time he's just sticking to the harmonica solo from Nalargon Man. Everyone likes that.
